Manaus professionals participate in a workshop on breastfeeding management

Action is part of a campaign that aims to raise awareness about the importance of supporting women to ensure breastfeeding

Manaus (AM) – The Manaus City Hall, through the Municipal Health Secretariat (Semsa), promoted, on Tuesday (8), in the auditorium of the Fametro unit, in Cachoeirinha, South Zone, the first workshop “Breastfeeding Management”. The course was part of the “Golden August” celebrations, a campaign aimed at making society aware of the importance of supporting women to ensure breastfeeding, which is essential for the healthy development of children.

The workshop, aimed at health professionals (doctors, nurses and nursing technicians) from the five Health Districts (Disas) of Semsa, took place from 8 am to 5 pm. The conversation wheel, which allows for horizontal dialogue and protagonism in the search for solutions, was the methodology chosen for the development of activities.

The head of the Child and Adolescent Health Care Nucleus, Janaína Sá Terra, informed that 60 professionals, nominated by the Health Districts, participated in the workshop, carried out in partnership with the Amazon Society of Pediatrics (Saped) and with the support of United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA).

“The professionals were divided into five groups and each team had a theme. To develop each of the axes that addressed the anatomy of the breast, latching on and correct position, the removal of breast milk, nipple trauma and issues related to the health of the mother and baby, we had facilitators. Our concern was precisely to talk about situations in the routine of Primary Care professionals”,

explained.

The technician from the Child and Adolescent Health Care Center, nurse Ivone Amazonas, acted as workshop facilitator and added that, by knowing and mastering the techniques, professionals will directly contribute to the protection and encouragement of breastfeeding and, thus , reduce child mortality.

“The main objective was to train professionals for the adequate and safe management of breastfeeding in the units, without the need to relocate this mother to a maternity hospital. It was a fruitful activity for all the participants”,

he said.

The coordinator of Adra’s Health Project in Manaus, Susi Leão, praised Semsa’s initiative and reinforced that the partnerships between the institutions have yielded good results. “In this event today, we were able to advance further in the dissemination of information, contributing to the improvement of health professionals and raising awareness among the population in general”, she guaranteed.

Doctor Ezequiel Fernandes, who works at USF São Francisco, in the South Zone of Manaus, noted that the workshop helped to deepen knowledge about breastfeeding.

“It is important that every health professional know how to guide and strengthen this practice, so that children are exclusively breastfed with breast milk until they are six months old and that, after this period, when they start to eat solid food, they are able to maintain breastfeeding, following the recommendations of the World Health Organization”, he highlighted.
