Manaus hosts the 5th edition of the “National Comics Week”

The objective of the action is to promote reading among young people aged between 14 and 25, as well as opening space for local artists and bringing professionals from the Brazilian publishing market to Manaus.

Manaus (AM) — Manaus will host, on the 28th, 29th and 30th of January and the 4th and 5th of February, the “National Comics Week”, which will take place at the Amazonas Public Library, located in the center of the capital of Amazonas. The aim of the action is to encourage reading among young people aged 14 to 25, as well as opening space for local artists and bringing professionals from the Brazilian publishing market to the city.

“We are looking forward to this great movement that encourages our young people to read, on the other hand, we also praise our artists who have the gift of teaching through literary works”,

said the CEO of the Municipal Foundation for Culture, Tourism and Events (Manauscult), Alonso Oliveira.

For the event’s coordinator, Evaldo Vasconcelos, the National Comics Week works on the transversality of literary culture for the new generation.

“There is a circuit of comic book events in Brazil. The biggest ones are the Belo Horizonte Comics Festival and the Curitiba Comics Biennial, and artists from all over Brazil go to these events to network, present work to publishers, close contracts. So we work to encourage both the reader and the artist”,

explained.

The event has been held since 2019 in celebration of National Comics Day, celebrated on January 30. During comics week, Brazilian artists and regional works are presented and exalted. Among the releases announced for this year is the HQ Death Hunt, an unpublished work by screenwriter Stan Lee, launched by Social Comics, the largest comic book reading app.

Another highlight of the event is the Artists’ Alley, a comic book fair that, this year, will receive artists from Pará, Pernambuco, Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Brasília and a delegation of artists from Roraima.

The National Comics Week in Manaus will have, starting this year, a partnership with the Roraimense Comics Fair. The collaboration between the two events aims to share costs and allow some of the guest artists from Amazonas to also participate in Roraima.

Highlights for this year

Among the speakers, one of the highlights is the Colombian comic artist Sindy Infante who will give the lecture: “Cooking Elephants, Comic’s creative process”. The author holds a master’s degree in Children’s Book Illustration from the Cambridge School of Art, England. Sindy is the author of the graphic novel Elefantes en el cuarto and co-author of the graphic novel Recetario de flavors lejanos. She has given lectures and workshops on illustration, drawing and graphic narrative at Book Fairs and Festivals in different countries such as Chile, Mexico, Norway and Panama.

The selection of guest artists has always been concerned with being more than a showcase for national artists, but also providing an exchange of information with guests who bring knowledge to local artists and give visibility in the Brazilian publishing market to what is produced in Amazonas.

Keeping this proposal, this year the event will bring, in addition to comic artists, two publishers from the national market to participate in chats and portfolio evaluations with artists of the event. Another novelty this year will be the holding of the first edition of the Joaquim Melo Contest, a selection for artists from the North region.
