Machines react to 2G and 3G shutdown by telecoms – 11/02/2023 – Panel SA

Machine companies took the field against Vivo, TIM, Claro, which intend to turn off 2G and 3G mobile phone signals. The initiative is under analysis at Anatel (National Telecommunications Agency).

Represented by Abranet (Brazilian Internet Association), the machines claim that they depend on 2G and 3G connections to carry out operations in rural areas and remote regions, where 4G and 5G have not yet arrived.

This Wednesday (1), the association asked the agency to be cautious when presenting its contributions on the matter.

In the document, she considers that the coverage of mobile telecommunications networks is still restricted to municipal headquarters and large urban centers.

“Much of the national territory does not have planned coverage and most likely will not have it in the future due to a lack of regulatory obligation and economic interest”, says Abranet.

According to the entity, “a considerable part of the equipment used by commercial establishments only operates in 2G/3G”.

In retail, the vast majority of machines operate on 3G.

On another front, operators want to accelerate the shutdown which, for them, generates high costs without practically generating revenue.

Anatel opened a public consultation at the request of Conexis, an association that represents the sector.

The association wants to discuss the disconnection of old signals and proposes a technology upgrade (4G and 5G) to operate in the same frequency bands currently explored by 2G and 3G.

Frequencies are avenues in the air through which telecoms make their signals travel without interference.

2G was the predominant technology until 2005, which allowed the exchange of messages via text (torpedoes).

3G arrived in 2014 and was the technology that made mobile internet viable.

Both technologies coexisted and powered 200 million lines in the past. Today, according to data from Anatel, they have less than 20 million users.
