President Lula should launch, next week, the optical cable installed in the bed of the Amazon river and which will connect 9 municipalities in the region between Manaus (AM) and Santarém (PA).

The project was developed by Seja Digital, a company created after the 4G auction to carry out the compensation provided for in the notice.

Instead of paying high grants, the telecoms winning the event committed themselves to making obligatory investments in return.

Seja Digital, managed by a council presided over by Anatel (National Telecommunications Agency), began to implement this public policy, relying on resources deposited by the telecoms — around R$ 3 billion.

At first, they used the money to digitize the TV signal and distribute converters to those who still didn’t have a digital device.

With the resources left over, the company set out to connect the Amazon region using underwater cables.

“It was the first time that a private company was created to implement a government policy”, Antonio Carlos Martelletto, president of Seja Digital, told the column. “A company that has private ‘shareholders’ chaired by an Anatel director.”

On another front, with the surplus of resources deposited by the operators, the company started to complete the digitization of smaller municipalities that had been left out of the first round of digital TV. Among the remaining 1,650, there are still about 650 to go.

The project, named Norte Conectado, was entirely implemented with resources from the operators that won the 4G auction.

The work cost R$ 165 million to carry the cable (a bundle with 24 optical fibers) for 1,200 km between Manaus (AM) and Santarém (PA), passing through 9 other municipalities.

Upon reaching the headquarters of each of them, the fibers are connected to power plants on the ground. From these ground stations, schools and schools will be activated.

Private companies interested in offering internet service will be able to contract the capacity installed there. There will also be free wi-fi points for the population.

With the end of the projects, Seja Digital should be closed at the end of the year.
