President Lula (PT) dismissed this Tuesday (20) the executive secretary of the Ministry of Finance, Gabriel Galípolo, and appointed Dario Durigan to the position.
Galípolo leaves office because he was nominated to take over the Monetary Policy Directorate of the Central Bank. He will still undergo a sabbatical at the Senate CAE (Commission on Economic Affairs) on June 27 before taking office in the new post.
For his place, the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, chose Durigan, who has a degree in law, was a special advisor at the City of São Paulo and worked for WhatsApp during the negotiations of the Fake News bill in Congress.
He is described by people who know him as smart and resourceful. On the other hand, there is still doubt about how he will act in the day-to-day of a ministry as large as the Treasury, which conducts the main agendas of the government.
Galípolo, in turn, will need to balance between the Central Bank’s legal autonomy and the mission credited to it to pave the way for the Selic cut — an appeal by the president echoed by members of the government and by PT staff since the beginning of his term. .
