Lula: Congress will not approve the reform that the government wants – 7/6/2023 – Market

President Lula (PT) said this Thursday (6) that Congress should not approve a tax reform that the government wants, but praised the fact that a change in the country’s tax collection was approved in a democratic period.

“Tax reform is only carried out in an authoritarian regime, when the government supports it. And we are doing it in a democratic regime, negotiating with everyone and it will be approved. It is not what each of you wants, it is not what Haddad wants , it’s not what I want, but that’s okay. We are not masters of reason,” he said.

He stated that the text is the result of the relationship with the Legislative and that this has to be respected.

“We have to deal with the relationship of forces that are in the National Congress, the deputies that are there, for good or bad, were chosen by Brazilian society, therefore they deserve as much respect as I think Alckmin and I deserve”, he declared.

The statement was given at a meeting of the CNDI (National Council for Industrial Development), with the participation of several ministers and entities representing industry sectors and Brazilian society.

On the occasion, the vice-president and minister of Development, Commerce, Industry and Services, Geraldo Alckmin (PSB), stated that the Executive will launch a new industrial policy for the country with an estimated R$ 106 billion in investments that will be focused on inclusion socio-economic, increased productivity and sustainability, among other actions.

The minister also mentioned the health industrial complex, agro-industrial chains and the contribution to innovation, decarbonization, infrastructure and sanitation.

“On the day the council installs the possibility of having a historic day, which is the approval of the tax reform, which will be fundamental for the Brazilian economy”, he said.
