A group of hackers would have used a clandestine device, known as a “chupa-cabra”, in the internal network of two agencies of the INSS (National Institute of Social Security) in Teresina, according to the Federal Police.
The criminals’ aim was to steal Social Security data, reactivate benefits and obtain improper payments, says the investigation.
Operation Upgrade fulfilled, this Thursday morning (6), 46 court orders, 22 for temporary arrest and 24 for search and seizure, issued by the 1st Federal Court of Teresina. The action was carried out in four states, according to the PF.
According to the agency, criminals used the clandestine electronic device directly on the INSS network. After stealing data, they reactivated benefits and generated late payments. The sums were sent to bank accounts other than those of the insured.
The action was an offshoot of the Chupa-cabra and Backup operations, launched this year in the capitals of Piauí and São Paulo. More than one hundred agents were mobilized, with support from the Social Security Intelligence Coordination.
Investigations point out that a shell company, the hackers base, would be headquartered in São Paulo. The group would be responsible for cyber intrusions in several states of the federation, leaking INSS server passwords and undue reactivation of benefits.
The PF still does not know the total amount of damage caused by criminal actions. Suspects may respond for crimes of criminal organization, electronic theft, computer device invasion and laundering of goods and values. Together, the penalties can reach 30 years in prison.
