Low consumption requires caution from the bar and restaurant sector

Many establishments in the food sector outside the home are already feeling the drop in the flow of customers. It’s just that the year starts with the party bill and new bills to pay, which reduces the consumption power of the Brazilian population. But despite this drop in the first months of the year, the trend is for the sector to warm up, starting in March.
According to economist João Ricardo Tonin, spending on IPVA, IPTU and school supplies pull down the financial condition of families. And, apart from developments in tourist regions, most establishments should experience a drop in movement, especially in the first two months of the year.
“The scenario is challenging, but right now one should not do crazy things and offer services at any cost”, says Tonin, economist at the FoodCo Bulletin. For him, businessmen should take advantage of the downturn in the movement to reassess menu prices, make small renovations, give employees vacations and even test new products.
Tonin points out that these are measures that help entrepreneurs to act cautiously, focusing on ensuring a better financial condition for when the movement returns. And he guarantees, he will come back! “There are two things that Brazilians cannot do: stay indoors for a long time and consume,” he says.
“The financial condition of Brazilian families tends to improve from March when the job market heats up and the circulation of money in the economy increases”, he explains. The economist also states that when the resumption of consumption happens, whoever has the financial health of the business up to date will come out ahead.
