Interview with Jane’s Addiction The Lollapalooza festival was created in 1991 by Perry Farrell, vocalist of Jane’s Addiction. At the same time that his band was falling apart, he managed to put a festival on its feet that seemed to be mambembe, but became one of the biggest brands of pop culture in recent decades. Thirty-two years later, he managed to rebuild the band’s original line-up and take it to the festival, now a multinational event. Bassist Eric Avery played in Lolla in 1991, left Jane’s Addiction, and is now back, reconciled with Perry. He tells these twists in the video above. “Back in 1991 it was an experiment. We didn’t know what was going to happen. At the time, some people were saying, ‘Who’s going to see a festival that has Siouxsie and the Banshees, Butthole Surfers, Living Color… all these different styles? .’ It was a doubt at the time. And it exploded. Now we are confident that it works, so many years later”, he says, about Lolla’s different alternative formula. “In my personal history it’s dramatic, to have this definite thing happen when I was young, and all these years later to come back and live it again,” he says of rejoining the band at the festival that marked his departure. Soon after, drummer Stephen Perkins and guitarist Dave Navarro. The Los Angeles group became one of the most important and influential in the explosion of alternative rock between the 80s and 90s. Eric played and wrote on the band’s first two and most important albums, “Nothing’s shocking” (1988) and “Ritual de usual” (1990). He helped create the sound that unites alternative rock, metal, funk and psychedelia. He became a reference, for example, to bassist Nick Oliveri, from Queens of the Stone Age. But Jane’s Addiction went into crisis. The main fight was over drug use on tour. The divide was between Perry and Stephen Perkins, who were fine with the chaos, and Avery and Navarro, who couldn’t live in that environment. Therefore, the 1991 tour was already the farewell. Perry Farrell and Dave Navarro even bumped into each other and fought on stage at the first Lollapalooza. The band broke up anyway, but the festival took off. Perry turned the tour into a traveling festival, and invited the cream of alternative music of the day. Lolla became a phenomenon of that generation and toured the US until 1997. Then, in 2005, it returned in a more conventional and international format, with editions around the world, including Brazil, since 2012. Jane’s Addiction has tried several comebacks since then. The group recorded two albums, in 2003 and 2011, far from the impact of the previous ones. Eric declined all invitations to return, except for shows between 2008 and 2010 – but left before the recording of the last album. This time, the original reunion was achieved, thanks to an effort by the late drummer Taylor Hawkins. The big problem was that Dave Navarro is still suffering from long Covid symptoms. On the current tour, he is replaced by Josh Klinghoffer. He does part of a generation of US rock musicians influenced by Jane’s Addiction. He played for ten years in the Red Hot Chili Peppers, between 2009 and 2019. The influence of the band he plays in today was “huge”, says Josh. “No other band has made me so proud to be from Los Angeles”, adds the Californian musician. “All four members of Jane’s Addiction have a unique way of playing, writing and performing. That’s what a band is all about. And it’s always been my dream to have a band like that where every point is equally creative and powerful,” he raves. “You were talking about creating Lollapalooza. It was more than the music. It was a feeling of excitement and cultural revolution that surrounded their music. And that set the stage for half of the decade that followed. And it made me, young man, stay excited, interested in music, learning to play instruments, and dedicating my life to that”, says the guitarist.
