Event is part of the celebrations of the 94th anniversary of Japanese immigration to the Amazon

The largest Festival of Japanese Culture in Northern Brazil, the Jungle Matisuri, started this Friday (11) and continues until Sunday (13), at the Amazonas Vasco Vasques Convention Center, located on Avenida Constantino Nery, in the Centro- West of Manaus.

The Jungle Matsuri is part of the celebrations of the 94th anniversary of Japanese immigration to the Amazon, and this year, it expects a circulating audience of more than 30,000 people in the three days of the event. The festival is organized by the Japanese-Brazilian Association of the Western Amazon (Nippaku) and has the support of the Consulate General of Japan and the Japan Foundation.

Japanese immigration in the Amazon has a history of more than 90 years, where the Nikkei community, who are Japanese descendants, is becoming increasingly present and significant in the city of Manaus, with the performance of these descendants in various segments, which range from culture to industry, as explained by Manauscult’s CEO, Osvaldo Cardoso.

“There is no way we can talk about the industrial development of Manaus and Amazonas without this partnership with the Japanese community. This here is a festival where Japan comes into Manaus for three days. From agriculture to large industries, the Japanese have helped the economy of Amazonas a lot. Currently, around 40 companies operate in the Industrial Pole of Manaus (PIM). Data from the Monitoring, Management and Technological Analysis System, from the Manaus Free Trade Zone Superintendence (Suframa), point out that Japanese companies are also the most active in the State, and have continued to support the economic and technological development of the region for over 40 years. years.

For the Consul General of Japan in Manaus, Masahiro Ogino, the festival is an opportunity to strengthen ties between Japan and the Amazon. In addition to encouraging tourist exchange and deepening relations, especially in the areas of bilateral trade, combating climate change, education and integration between communities. As of September 30th of this year, Brazilian and Japanese tourists will be able to travel between both countries without the need to obtain a visa.

Visiting hours on Saturday the 12th and Sunday the 13th will be extended from 10am to 10pm. The program includes taiko performances, typical dances, a parade and a cosplay contest. In addition, there will be cultural exhibitions, Manga, origami, kirigami and Pixel Art workshops, as well as activities for children.
