Julio Iglesias: repeat offender in international food trafficking – 01/16/2024 – Cozinha Bruta

Beans, mushrooms, lettuce, blackberries, raspberries, arugula and chard. These were some of the items in the suitcase with 42 kilos of food that Spanish singer Julio Iglesias had seized by health authorities at Punta Cana airport, in the Dominican Republic.

In a video circulating on social media, you can also see some whole chickens, pieces of meat that may be chicken or fish, shellfish, pumpkins and bananas.

Did the romantic music star, now 80 years old, decide to exchange art for food smuggling?

Apparently, Julio always takes a lot of food when he travels by plane.

There is a classic photo from 1986, when he was at the height of his career, in his private jet. On the small table in front of the singer, there is a bottle of French wine Château Lafite Rothschild (worth many thousands of reais), a potato tortilla (the most basic food in Spain) and a bucket of fried chicken from KFC.

In other words: Julio Iglesias is a repeat offender in international chicken smuggling.

Now, throw the first coxinha to anyone who has never moved food on plane trips. Chefs do this all the time. They bring ingredients from other countries in their bags and, if the Health Surveillance discovers them, they will confiscate them.

The reason for confiscation, which occurs in all countries, is the risk of introducing exotic agricultural diseases and pests. Julião’s fruits could, in theory, destroy the entire Dominican crop.

Once, at a work dinner at Fasano, they put me next to the owner of the whole stop, Gero (formerly Rogério) Fasano.

He told again a story that was already well known. Gero had traveled to Italy and brought with him a small bundle of very special artichokes, which only grow in a place close to Venice.

Upon disembarking in Guarulhos, he was stopped by the Ministry of Agriculture. In desperation, he grabbed the artichokes and ran out of the airport.

Fasano’s customers, of course, didn’t even smell the delicacy – Gero was captured without difficulty.
