The former president of the Court of Justice of Amazonas (TJAM), judge Graça Figueiredo, launches on Wednesday, March 8, International Women’s Day, the second edition of the book ‘Ladies of Justice – The Trajectory of Women in Judiciary Power and the Legal Career’, published by Editora Valer. The event is scheduled to take place in the Des auditorium. Arthur Virgílio do Carmo Ribeiro (building attached to the TJAM Headquarters), located at Av. André Araújo, s/n.º, Aleixo.

The book deals with the trajectory of the woman who studies the science of Law and, after completing the course, joins the Judiciary, Public Defender or Public Ministry. In this new edition, according to the author, it gained an addition to the title, as women who have stood out in the legal career of our country are now included, showing that female participation is in all areas of the Brazilian and global legal order, and not just in the Magistracy.

The second woman to occupy the Presidency of the Court of Justice of Amazonas (in the biennium 2014/2016) in 131 years of history of the Institution, Graça Figueiredo has an optimistic view about female participation and seeks to point out in the book that, despite the arduous path, the women continue to explore and reach higher heights within an essentially male environment. “Over the years, we have made significant advances and we will continue building a more balanced scenario for the female public within the Brazilian judiciary and all legal careers”, she says in the presentation of the work.

According to the jurist and minister of the Superior Court of Justice, Nancy Andrighi, the work is, in summary, a loving tribute to the value of those who opened the first spaces, until then inaccessible, within the scope of the judiciary. “This valuable work undoubtedly fills a gap that existed in the literature on the history of women in the Brazilian judiciary, which, thanks to the dedication and service undertaken by the judge Graça, leads to the blessed tribute to the perseverance and success of the first female judges in Brazil .”

Graça Figueiredo still rescues the history of women who entered and stood out in the legal career. According to the writer Elson Farias, it is a good book for the way it was written, in a colloquial and flowing language, simple and direct.

A decade of research

Result of 10 years of research, the book addresses, in its 286 pages, the evolution of a female profile, at first, of a “conformed” nature in social and legal participation for gradual advances, motivated by a more empowered posture, which allowed women to expand their participation in the judiciary, as judges and judges; or as ministers; attorneys; prosecutors; public defenders; as well as in law.

Anchoring the information, the book rescues biblical characters – such as Deborah, judge and prophetess of Israel; mythological – like the goddess Minerva; and recalls historical facts – such as the tragedy that occurred in a textile factory, in 1857, in New York, when women were burned alive for demanding better working conditions, making this date a world day of struggle for women’s equal rights.

Likewise, it presents graphs of the composition of the Superior Courts of Brazil, in the Courts of The Hague and in the International Criminal Court, passing through the Courts of Justice of the States and Federal District, with emphasis on the Court of Justice of Amazonas, Court of which the author is member for over 43 years.

Published by Editora Valer, the book is enriched with photos and information about the pioneering women of Brazilian Justice, highlighting the first female judge in Brazil – Auri Moura Costa -, the first to join the disembargatory; and the first women on the Federal Supreme Court (STF); at the Superior Electoral Court (TSE); at the Superior Court of Justice (STJ) and the National Council of Justice (CNJ), also rescuing the history of the judges who entered the Court of Justice of Amazonas, such as Nayde Vasconcellos, Marinildes Costeira de Mendonça Lima and Liana Belém Pereira Mendonça de Souza .
