Women from the women’s penitentiary in the Pedrinhas complex, in São Luís (MA), who participate in the Humanitas 360 Institute cooperative, are starting to open a bank account to deposit remuneration for Tereza brand handicrafts this month.
The project is part of the effort developed by the penitentiary system in Maranhão to overcome the collapse that reached its peak a decade ago, in the massacre that left 64 prisoners dead, many decapitated.
Accounts were opened for 15 women at Itaú, which supports the institute.
The Tereza brand, for products such as purses and wallets, brings together the work of social cooperatives for women prisoners, former prisoners and victims of domestic violence.
