The sector showed an increase of 0.5% compared to August 2022
The country’s industrial production grew 0.4% in August this year, compared to July. The result came after a drop of 0.6% in July. The data comes from the Monthly Industrial Survey (PIM), released this Tuesday (3), in Rio de Janeiro, by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).
The sector showed an increase of 0.5% compared to August 2022. However, it recorded drops of 0.3% in the year to date and 0.1% in the 12-month period.
“Even with the growth result in August 2023, the industry remains far from recovering the losses of the recent past, being, at this moment, 1.8% below the pre-pandemic level, that is, February 2020, and 18, 3% below the highest point in the historical series, which was reached in May 2011”, said the research manager, André Macedo.
Increased production
From July to August, 18 of the 25 industrial sectors surveyed by IBGE showed an increase in production, with highlights being pharmochemicals and pharmaceuticals (18.6%), motor vehicles, trailers and bodies (5.2%) and computer equipment, electronic and optical products (16.6%).
Among the six falling activities, the main declines were in mining and quarrying industries (-2.7%), miscellaneous products (-8.0%), leather, travel articles and footwear (-4.2%) and metallurgy ( -1.1%). Pulp, paper and paper products are part of a segment that showed stability in the month.
In the analysis of the industry’s four major economic categories, three increased: durable consumer goods (8%), semi- and non-durable consumer goods (1%) and capital goods, that is, machines and equipment used in the production sector (4.3%). In the opposite direction, intermediate goods, that is, industrialized inputs used in the productive sector, fell by 0.3%.
