Income tax breaks record: 40 million declarations – 05/31/2023 – Market

The number of income tax returns delivered in 2023 broke a record, according to the Federal Revenue. By 6:40 pm this Wednesday (31), five hours before the deadline for delivery, the tax authorities had received more than 40 million documents.

The high number is attributed by José Carlos da Fonseca, national supervisor of the Income Tax program, to some factors, such as the facilities brought by the pre-filled declaration and the high number of rectifying declarations, which, this year, represented 8% of the total.

In 2023, Revenue expected to receive up to 39.5 million documents, an increase of 3 million compared to 2022, when the final delivery was 36.3 million. Last year, however, the total rectifications stood at 2.4 million.

“This year, there are already more than 3,156,003, demonstrating that taxpayers are seeking information so that they can regularize their declarations”, says the agency.

Of the total, 61% will refund tax, 20% must pay income tax and 19% have neither tax to refund nor to pay, which is when the final balance is zeroed.

The deadline to declare the IR ends at 23:59 this Wednesday. Those who delay shipping pay a minimum fine of R$ 165.74, which can reach 20% of the tax due for the year. The calculation of the fine is 1% per month on the tax due, limited to 20%, but if, after determining the penalty, the amount is less than R$ 165.74, the minimum is charged.

Last year, the record reached was attributed to the lag in the Income Tax table, which had not been readjusted since 2015, which makes workers and retirees pay more income tax. In addition, at least 500,000 declarants with operations on the Stock Exchange were obliged to submit the declaration in 2022. This year, this rule changed.

In May 2023, the government readjusted the IR exemption range, expanding the number of taxpayers who will no longer pay tax, but the new calculations will only be reflected in the 2024 declaration.

Did you leave the IR for the last minute? know what to do

For last-minute declarants, there are at least two easier ways: use the pre-filled declaration or send the incomplete IR and then correct the missing data.

The pre-filled statement is available to all taxpayers who have a gov.br silver or gold account (see here how to get a silver or gold level). It can be done in the IR generator program on the computer, online, in the e-CAC or Portal Gov.br, or by computer or tablet, in the Meu Imposto de Renda application.

Anyone who will do it on the computer must download the program (check out the download step by step here). The same rule applies to anyone who is going to do it on their cell phone or tablet. Anyone filling out the IR online should enter the e-CAC or gov.br and search for “My Income Tax”. Just click on the year 2023 and start the statement.

HOW TO START COMPLETING THE COMPUTER:

  • Open the IRPF 2023 and click on “New”
  • Choose annual adjustment statement
  • Go to the option “Start statement from pre-populated”
  • Inform it is a self-declaration and click OK
  • The system will ask for the gov.br password; new tab will open
  • Enter CPF and password
  • Afterwards, you will be directed to the statement

The main form to be completed is “Taxpayer Information”. If you do not put the data in this form, there is no way to send the IR. It is she who must be OK if the citizen chooses to send the declaration incomplete to rectify later.
