Illegal gold: Sale now requires electronic invoice – 03/30/2023 – Market

The sale of gold from mining now has an electronic invoice. The normative instruction of the Federal Revenue officializing the change was published this Thursday (29).
Since 2001, the Revenue has maintained the use of paper notes, although the digitalized document is already used in most sectors. The electronic invoice will be required in July this year.
The change was a request from environmental organizations, entities in the mining sector and even by the Federal Police, as it was considered an important instrument to combat illegal mining, mainly in indigenous lands and environmental reserves.
“The demand for electronic invoices is a fundamental measure to start moralizing the sale of gold in Brazil. Finally, the country is starting to adopt measures to control mining in the Amazon”, says Larissa Rodrigues, portfolio manager at the Institute Choices.
The change in the invoice is the first change in a package of changes planned for the mining. The government of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva is also preparing to repeal Law 12,844, which established the end of the presumption of good faith in the purchase of gold.
An MP (Provisional Measure) is in the final stages of elaboration.
The text establishes a series of new requirements in transactions with the metal and paves the way for establishing traceability, an old claim of those who combat illegal mining. The measure also makes it clear that the gold seller is civilly and criminally liable for the information provided during the sale and transportation.
