Idec notifies Nubank about scams via application – 04/10/2023 – Market

Idec (Brazilian Institute of Consumer Defense) sent a notification to Nubank on Thursday (6) questioning how fintech guarantees customer safety.

The decision to send the notification came after the agency had access to “several reports” of people who claim to have been scammed by the Nubank application.

Still according to the consumer protection institute, the main criticism of the victims is that Nubank does not have or does not use a system that blocks transactions that deviate from the account standard. Sought, fintech said it maintains constant surveillance on the use of services.

Account invasion by hackers, improper loans made in the name of the holders and transfers of large amounts of money to other accounts are among the main complaints.

In one of the reports to which Idec had access, the Nubank customer says that, in four minutes, the criminals managed to make four transactions via Pix that totaled R$ 150 thousand, and the holder would never have made withdrawals above R$ 250 .

“In recent weeks there have been several reports on social networks, complaint platforms and on the consumer.gov.br website that deal with the lack of security in the Nubank application”, says Idec.

In a note, Nubank said that security is a priority and that it maintains constant vigilance over the use of services, including the development of protection tools to help users prevent and inhibit scams.

“With regard to these crimes, Nubank maintains specialized teams and channels open 24 hours a day to assist victims. company,” said fintech.

According to Idec, Nubank even sent an email alert to customers in early April, in which it reported that the fraud is a remote access scam, in which fraudsters are able to make bank transfers after the consumer has downloaded of pirated applications, which allow remote access by third parties to the victim’s cell phone.

Fintech would also have highlighted in the statement that the reported problems do not constitute a bank security breach and recommended that customers download the updated version of the Nubank application.

The consumer protection body says that the purpose of the notification is to get the fintech to give more details about the facts reported, inform why preventive measures were not adopted in advance and how it is dealing with the victims of the scams.

“Article 14 of the Consumer Defense Code (CDC) obliges the supplier to respond by repairing the damage caused to consumers by defects resulting from the provision of its services. In this way, it is the bank’s responsibility to guarantee the quality and safety of the service offered , bearing any losses”, said the lawyer for Idec’s financial services program, Fábio Machado Pasin.

After receiving the notification, Nubank has a period of 15 consecutive days to send the answers.
