The Brazilian Institute for the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Ibama) said it will analyze Petrobras’ new request for oil exploration in the basin at the mouth of the Amazon. After having the licensing request denied by the agency, the state-owned company resubmitted the request on Thursday (25).

“Ibama informs that it received this Thursday (25/05) the resubmission of the Request for the Issuance of an environmental license for offshore drilling activity in Block FZA-M-59, on the Brazilian Equatorial Margin, by Petrobras. The Institute will analyze again the proposal and technically discuss the changes presented in the new request”, said Ibama in a note released on Friday (26), reported the g1 portal.

On the 17th, the president of Ibama, Rodrigo Agostinho, denied the license requested by the company. “There is no doubt that Petrobras was offered every opportunity to remedy critical points of its project, but that this project still presents worrying inconsistencies for the safe operation in a new exploratory frontier of high socio-environmental vulnerability”, said Agostinho when denying the environmental license.
