Hypera enters the Cannabis race – 05/06/2023 – Cannabis Inc.

Little by little, competition in the cannabis is changing in Brazil. That’s because big pharmaceutical companies are entering the national market, although it is still dominated by small startups focused on importing medicinal oil. They add up to at least 300 companies.
From the group of the twenty largest companies, Prati-Donaduzzi (15th) took the lead by obtaining the first authorization from Anvisa (Health Surveillance Agency) to manufacture the medicinal oil derived from the plant. Then it was Cimed’s turn (2nd). This week Hypera Pharma (17th) announced that its first CBD arrived at pharmacies in the country.
Since November 2019, Anvisa (Health Surveillance Agency) has allowed companies to market the products in Brazilian pharmacies, as long as they pass the health criteria, which are the same required for the pharmaceutical industry.
This is one of the difficulties faced by startups. The regulatory cannabis medicine changes according to the country. In the USA, for example, it is not considered a medicine, which until today has greatly facilitated trade there. But after obtaining the sanitary authorization, the second challenge is to place the products on the shelves. It is a very costly operation, which startups do not have the strength to do, and that is why they end up associating themselves with large pharmaceutical companies.
Hypera launched CBD (Cannabidiol, derived from the plant without psychoactive effect) full spectrum (term that indicates that the product has all the other cannabinoids of the plant in smaller proportions). Studies point out that the plant has more than 150 phytocannabinoids. The best known are CBD, THC (Tetrahydrocannabidiol, derived from Cannabis, important for controlling chronic pain) and CBG (Cannabigerol). Sold only with a medical prescription – like all CBD oils –, Hypera’s product was named Extracto de Cannabis Sativa Mantecorp Farmasa, in three presentations, with different concentrations.
“There are more than 180,000 patients registered with Anvisa (Health Surveillance Agency), who benefit from the product”, says Breno Oliveira, CEO of Hypera Pharma. “There are several reports on the effectiveness of the treatment, with good clinical results. Before this alternative was not available in Brazil, and we want to provide access to innovative health treatments for the Brazilian population.”
Hypera is known for popular drugs such as Epocler and Engov, which make up the company’s strongest brands. They earned R$ 100 million in the last quarter. Herbal medicines come in as an alternative to the treatment of chronic pain, fibromyalgia, depression and sleep disorders.
