Hyaluronic Acid evolves and generates more natural results – 7/16/2023 – Equilibrium

Hyaluronic acid is not all the same. The product began to be used in aesthetic medicine as a filler, in procedures popularly known as facial harmonization, and has been perfected over the years to acquire different consistencies. Now, according to the density of each type, it adapts to different regions of the face and gives more natural results to treatments.

Just like collagen, this substance also already exists in our organism. But it is also reproduced in the laboratory so that it can be applied in larger quantities, through syringes and cannulas, promoting volume and support to some areas of the face.

“Hyaluronic acid is very safe. Serious companies, which have been in the market for a long time, stand out for the quality and sterility of the product, in addition to investing a lot in research to improve the technology for this application”, says dermatologist Elisete Crocco, coordinator from the cosmiatry department of the SBD (Brazilian Society of Dermatology).

The material is naturally reabsorbed by our organism and lasts for around two years. However, if the patient does not like the result, it is possible to remove it by injecting an enzyme called hyaluronidase.

When it began to be incorporated by aesthetic medicine, in the late 1990s, hyaluronic acid was basically used to fill lips and the nasolabial folds (called the Chinese mustache).

“If we think about the history of hyaluronic acid, the first indications were just as a filler”, says plastic surgeon Fábio Saito, director of medical education at Galderma.

Over time, specialists began to better understand how the substance adapts to the anatomy of the face, and the need arose to develop products with different rheological capabilities, that is, with varying degrees of resistance to deformation.

Saito states that the aging of the face affects all layers: there is bone loss, muscles and ligaments become more slack, there is loss of fat pads and the skin also becomes more flaccid.

To replace harder and deeper structures, such as bone, you need products that are also firmer. Already to return the lost fat, the substance must be soft. To give volume to the middle third, in the region of the cheekbones, the needs are already different.

“Where there is fat loss, I want a product that is volumizing, that has the ability to fill that space, but that is flexible enough so that when you smile, when you do facial movements, they preserve these characteristics. No it can be so hard, otherwise the expression becomes artificial”, he points out.

The lips, which stretch as we speak and smile, need an even more flexible substance for the effect to be natural and avoid that “duck-bill” aspect.

The more fluid hyaluronic acid has the ability to improve skin quality when it is injected superficially under the dermis. The product is called a skinbooster and it promotes hydration and smoothes fine lines.

“I currently consider the name filler very inadequate to talk about hyaluronic acid, taking into account all the benefits it can offer”, observes Saito.

It was in search of natural results that businesswoman Sendy Mantovan, 39, sought a professional, in 2017, to correct deep dark circles.

“I had a very big problem with dark circles, but I also felt an absurd fear of looking ugly, artificial, with a crooked face”, she says.

Sendy says that, to feel more secure, she researched a lot about the professional. “I thought it wise for him to understand my fear and go through the procedures little by little, explaining what I could do to improve the complaints I had”.

The businesswoman, who had never performed any such procedure before, filled her eyes with hyaluronic acid and applied botulinum toxin. “I loved it so much as it was that I took courage to do more things, according to what the doctor indicated to me”, she reports.

She and the professional drew up a treatment plan together, carried out little by little. To date, Sendy has already injected hyaluronic acid into the lips, cheekbones, chin and face contour.

“I also do Sculptra (collagen biostimulator) twice a year and laser to treat the skin”, he says.

Trusting the professional, observes dermatologist Elisete Crocco, is an essential factor for the results of treatments to be positive. You can’t just take into account the number of followers on social networks. “You need to research the doctor, find out if he is qualified to perform that type of procedure, ask for referrals from other patients.”

The intervention must be carried out in clinics, in a sterile environment and with adequate asepsis, to avoid infectious processes.

After finishing the procedure, the patient should not put his hands where the applications were made nor apply makeup in these areas for at least 24 hours so that there is no contamination by bacteria.

Crocco says that any invasive procedure can cause complications, but the doctor must always know how to treat them.

“If you notice that the region has become whitish, very swollen, hot, very red, contact the professional. It may be that a blood vessel has been reached by the cannula or obstructed by the product. In cases like this, the faster the doctor can act to treat the complication, the better it will be for the patient”, points out the dermatologist.

When such a situation is neglected, it can lead to tissue necrosis and loss of noble facial structures.
