Hospital São Luiz Itaim, one of Rede D’Or’s units in São Paulo, claims to have carried out the first lung autotransplantation in a patient with metastasis in Brazil. The procedure, carried out in the first half of this year, lasted ten hours and was successful, according to the institution.

“In this technique, we remove the lung and remove the tumor, to then reimplant the organ in the patient”, says thoracic surgeon Marcos Samano, responsible for the case. The patient was already breathing without the help of devices less than 24 hours after the operation.

“It is a highly complex surgery, which requires a multidisciplinary team to monitor the patient. In addition, of course, to a whole physical structure of the latest technology equipment to receive this organ and keep it in conservation conditions. With that we have enough time to remove the tumor and then return the organ to the body”, he says.

Filmmaker Pedro Henrique França and director Benedita Casé are going to launch the PcDPOD videocast on August 3, which they say is the first video podcast made by people with disabilities.
There will be eight episodes, available weekly on a YouTube channel and also on Spotify. Production is by Dia Estúdio.
“The name came from this idea of saying that we can be and do whatever we want, and not what the capacitism of Brazilian society determined that we were capable of”, says Pedro.
The last episode airs on September 21, National Day for the Fight of Persons with Disabilities. On the date, Pedro and Benedita will receive their mothers, Maria Helena and Regina Casé, respectively, as guests.
