Hemoam’s blood supply needs replenishing, even after record donations at Carnival

Manaus (AM) – The Hospital Foundation for Hematology and Hemotherapy of Amazonas (Hemoam) registered a record of blood donations during the Carnival period, thanks to the campaigns carried out in the state and to the great participation of the population. However, even with this mobilization, the stock of blood bags remains critical.

The demand for blood increased significantly during the Carnival period, due to the increase in traffic accidents and incidents related to the revelry. In addition, the resumption of elective surgeries after the holiday also contributed to the low stock.

Hemoam asks the population to continue donating blood to replenish the stock. Blood donation is essential to save lives, and all health safety measures are being taken to ensure the health of donors and recipients. Hemoam reinforces that donating blood is an act of solidarity and that each donation can help save up to four lives.

During the Carnival period, from February 17 to 26, 1,711 blood donations were made, including internal and external collections.

Current inventory
At the moment, Hemoam has a total stock of 415 bags, a number updated at 10:30 am this Friday (03). Of this total, 108 bags are O positive and 12 are O negative.

Safe blood stock is essential to ensure that patients who need transfusions have access to safe and quality blood, avoiding complications and health risks. In the case of type O positive and O negative, demand is especially high, and low stock can lead to emergency and life-threatening situations for patients.

Type O positive is the most common in the population, but the high demand is also due to the fact that it can be transfused to patients with other blood types, which makes it very useful in various medical situations. Therefore, it is essential that there is a safe stock of this type of blood, to meet the daily needs of patients throughout the state of Amazonas.

The type O negative is known as a universal donor, as it can be transfused to anyone, regardless of blood type. For this reason, it is especially important to have a safe stock of this blood type, as it is often used in emergency situations, where there is no time to do tests to find out the patient’s blood type.

Therefore, it is essential for people to donate blood regularly, especially if they are O positive or O negative donors. Blood donations are safe and pose no health risks, and can save lives and help maintain the health of the population.

who can donate
To donate blood, you must be between 18 and 69 years old, weigh from 50 kilos, be in good health, have slept at least six hours and be well fed. Young people aged between 16 and 17 can donate with formal authorization from their guardian or legal representative.
