JK Rowling has become a controversial figure in recent years, associated with cases of transphobia
British police said on Thursday (7) that they had received a complaint from a transgender presenter against writer JK Rowling, creator of “Harry Potter”, for comments made on social media.
India Willoughby, the first transgender presenter on British TV, accused Rowling of a “hate crime” over Rowling’s posts on Monday (4) on the social network X.
The writer denied the accusations, stating that it is not a crime to have critical opinions on gender issues.
“Yesterday I contacted Northumbria Police. I denounced JK Rowling for what she said”, said Willoughby in an interview with Byline Times, posted on X on Wednesday night (6).
“Calling a trans person a man, deliberately knowing that person is a woman — and I am a woman regardless of what JK Rowling claims, my birth certificate says female, my passport, all my documents, I am recognized by law as a woman — So for JK Rowling to deliberately, and that’s the word, misgender me even though she knows who I am, is very offensive,”
he added.
In recent years, the author has become a controversial figure in relation to transgender people and the definition of what it means to be a woman, being criticized by trans activists, but receiving support from some people who fight for women’s rights.
“Some time ago, my lawyers told me that not only do I have a clearly winnable case against India Willoughby for defamation, but that India’s obsessive attack on me over the last few years may even amount to harassment,”
commented Rowling on X.
