But in Itapetininga (SP), farmers are using a pruning technique to produce guava in the winter and earn more. On Yoshihiro Sakashita’s property, 1,500 guava trees were planted in 2021 and prepared for the first harvest to take place in July of this year, in the off-season in most guava producing regions. Production should reach 20 tons, and the fruit, which in the hot months is sold for approximately R$ 2, can reach R$ 7, according to the farmer. Sakashita adopted a different management for the plant to produce in winter: fruiting pruning (understand in the article above). And to avoid losses due to very low temperatures, it uses anti-freeze protection. According to producers, an advantage of producing guava in the cold is that there are fewer insect attacks.
