The federal government will pay an additional grant to traditional populations living in poverty who work with forest protection activities, said this Monday (5) Marina Silva, Minister of the Environment and Climate Change, in the resumption of a suspended program by the government of Jair Bolsonaro in 2019.
The so-called Bolsa Verde provides for the payment of an additional amount to Bolsa Família for families living in forest regions at risk of deforestation — for the time being, only in the Legal Amazon area. According to the minister, however, the intention is to expand it to other areas of the country as plans to combat deforestation are finalized for other biomes.
“In the world, 80% of protected forests are under the control of these traditional communities”, said the minister. “They will be paid for environmental protection services.”
The initial forecast is to serve 30,000 families. The ministry has funds in the budget for the payment, but there is still no date for the re-launch of the grant. It is still necessary to regulate the payments, redo the registrations so that it can be restarted.
