The country registered 24 outbreaks of the disease until this Monday (5); none is in farms, that is, in birds destined for food. Extra funds will be used by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock. The amount will be destined to the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa). The MP is signed by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and by the Minister of Planning, Simone Tebet. The text is already available in the “Official Gazette of the Union”. The extraordinary credit was released in the midst of the zoosanitary emergency in force in the country, due to the avian flu. On Monday (5), the Ministry of Agriculture confirmed that the number of outbreaks of the disease in the country rose from 19 to 24 (see details below). All cases involve species of wild birds, that is, those that live free in nature. In Brazil, there are no outbreaks of avian flu in poultry, that is, birds dedicated to food. Therefore, exports follow normally. There are no records of contamination of the disease from the consumption of properly prepared chicken or eggs, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). According to the federal government, among the actions to control and combat avian flu are the rapid identification, testing and health care of suspected cases. Cases of avian flu in the country The bulletin about the disease released on Monday (5) brings the following updates: ➡️In São Paulo, the first outbreak was confirmed: the case happened in Ubatuba and involves a bird of the terns species (Thalasseus maximus); ➡️ In Espírito Santo, 2 more outbreaks were confirmed: the two cases occurred in the municipality of Vila Velha, with 1 flock bird (Thalasseus acuflavidus) and 1 gray-headed gull (Chroicocephalus cirrocephalus); ➡️In Rio de Janeiro, 2 more outbreaks were confirmed: the two cases took place in Niterói and involve the frigate birds (Fregata magnificens) and terns (Thalasseus maximus). What is H5N1? H5N1 is a subtype of the Influenza virus that predominantly affects birds. It is less common in mammals and in humans. Avian Influenza was first diagnosed in birds in 1878 in Italy. But H5N1 was only isolated by scientists more than 100 years later, in 1996, in geese in Guangdong province, in southern China. Influenza viruses are divided into Low Pathogenicity (LPAI, mild) and High Pathogenicity (HPAI, severe): Low Pathogenicity: affects birds more mildly and often asymptomatically. The bird mortality rate in this case is low; High Pathogenicity: the disease manifests itself more severely, spreads rapidly among birds and has a high mortality rate among animals. Case of Low Pathogenicity in Brazil The Ministry of Agriculture also detected the low pathogenic avian influenza virus (H9N2) in a free-ranging duck, of the species Cairina moschata, in the city of Pará de Minas, in the state of Minas Gerais. The registration is not related to outbreaks of H5N1 in the country and does not require the application of emergency measures. “Low pathogenic avian influenza is not a notifiable disease to the World Organization for Animal Health (WHOA) and does not bring restrictions to international trade in Brazilian poultry products”, adds the organ. Evidences of the presence of other low pathogenic avian influenza viruses have already been found in Brazil previously. These viruses normally circulate in populations of wild birds, mainly aquatic ones, all over the world, causing mild or asymptomatic disease in domestic and wild birds, the Ministry points out.
