Google’s wallet will allow payments from QR Code, along the lines of Pix and Picpay. The app uses data from registered credit and debit cards to allow transactions without the need for a card. Until now, only owners of cell phones with proximity technology (NFC) could take advantage of the feature.
Brazil will be the first country to receive the functionality in the world. The launch is aimed at increasing access to the search giant’s digital wallet, according to Google’s payments strategy and operations lead, Natacha Litvinov.
About 60% of Android smartphones sold in the country come without NFC, according to data from the IDC consultancy.
The company did not specify a launch date during Google for Brazil, the multinational’s main event in the country, which took place this Tuesday (27).
Google’s digital wallet, which mainly serves Android devices, competes with Apple Wallet, whose cell phones are equipped with NFC.
After launch, it will be possible to make payments by pointing the cell phone camera at the code displayed on the payment machine, just as it works with Pix payments by QR Code.
Each payment will generate a unique QR Code. “This prevents a fraudulent code from being shown to the consumer at the time of payment,” says Ashley Jiang, Google Wallet Product Manager who led the project.
This measure prevents fraudsters from stealing data and money with manipulated QR Codes.
Using the digital wallet is safer than physical cards, according to Google. Smartphone payments on Google Pay do not send your actual card information.
“Instead, the merchant receives a unique encrypted code called a token. Google Pay also uses this feature to generate virtual card numbers and security codes for each transaction.”
Transaction data can be checked on the cell phone screen before confirming the payment. The wallet also holds purchase receipts for later reference.
