Google will reveal this Wednesday (10) new updates in the area of artificial intelligence in response to the challenges posed by Microsoft. The company that created Windows is threatening the search giant’s leadership in the advertising market, valued at nearly $300 billion.

Through an internal project codenamed Magi, Google sought to infuse its search engine with generative artificial intelligence, technology that can derive new content from previous data and produce human responses to a user’s question.

Google’s response is expected to be presented during the company’s annual I/O conference in Mountain View, Calif., near the company’s headquarters.

Google has seen its dominance in internet search challenged since rivals such as Microsoft began exploring generative AI tools as an alternative to the way content is currently presented on the web.

First came ChatGPT, a chatbot from OpenAI, a company backed by Microsoft that was seen by industry watchers as capable of undermining Google’s leadership. Then came the updated version of Bing, Microsoft’s search engine that received a chatbot system capable of answering questions that have no obvious search result online.

Last month, Microsoft reported gains in US search market share, recently growing to more than 100 million daily active users, still dwarfed by billions of Google searches.

Microsoft claims that every percentage point of share it gained in search advertising could generate an additional $2 billion in revenue.

For months now, teams at Google have raced to roll out technology at the I/O conference, with ChatGPT competitor Bard trying to defend company turf.

Google Chief Executive Sundar Pichai said this year that generative AI capable of discerning complex questions would be built into the company’s search engine, allowing searches such as “blogs by people who play piano and guitar.”

Google is also trying to reassert itself in the field of research and development. At Wednesday’s conference, the company is expected to announce a more powerful artificial intelligence model known as PaLM 2, CNBC reported.

The company is also expected to reveal new handsets for its Pixel line of devices, reported the media.
