Gillette offered BRL 500,000 for Mercadante’s mustache – 05/16/2023 – Panel SA

A well-known face in national politics, BNDES president Aloizio Mercadante told this columnist that Gillette offered him BRL 500,000 to remove his notorious mustache. He ignored the dollar signs.

“I told them I would never shave my mustache for money,” he explained.

The chat appeared on the Roda Viva Program, on TV Cultura, this Monday (15), and continued after the cameras were turned off.

Mercadante celebrated 50 years of political militancy this year. Was asked by this columnist why he never thought about shaving his mustache.

He revealed that he had given up running for elected office, for example, but that, from his trademark, he does not give up. It is a symbolic matter, which transcends appearance.

“It’s a way of saying the following: I’ve been through a lot of things in life, I’ve changed a lot, but some things I don’t hand over”, he explained. “There are principles that we don’t negotiate and don’t change. You have to be consistent in life and you have to be committed.”

It’s decades of mustache, which in fame and longevity perhaps only competes with José Sarney’s on the political scene.

Regarding Gillette’s proposal, Mercadante did not place it in space and time.

He said he might even accept it, never for money. But that would be like stripping yourself of your own identity: “A guarana will never be a coke”.
