Geographical indication recognition is filed with the INPI

Carne de Onça had its request for Geographical Indication (GI) recognition filed with the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), this Tuesday (21), in the Indication of Origin modality. The action recognizes it as part of the culture and history of Curitiba, and the search for recognition considers the importance of the location in the production of the delicacy. In 2016, the dish was made official as a cultural heritage of the city.
The GI identifies the origin of a product or service that has certain qualities thanks to its origin, or that it is a location recognized by the item.
“Our region has an abundant ethnic richness, with differentiated and consolidated dishes”, explains Marcia Giubertoni, consultant at Sebrae/PR. “It is a privilege for Sebrae / PR to support entrepreneurs in the search for what really needed to be protected”, she adds.
The entity joined the Associação Amigos da Onça (AAONÇA) in January this year. Together, they followed INPI’s protocol and methodology to carry out the action, which included the engagement of local businesspeople. Currently, more than 200 restaurants in Curitiba work with Carne de Onça, according to the association.
The participation of entrepreneurs in the sector involved aspects such as association, leadership and characterization, and the survey of history, plus the organization of a dossier with the documentation required to protect the product. “There was a lot of engagement from businesspeople. And this happened quickly, allowing the deposit to be made to the INPI in the same year the work began”, he informs.
“One of the biggest benefits of the GI for Carne de Onça is the protection of the dish as a Curitiba heritage, global recognition of the only typical dish from Curitiba. And also, the implementation of tourism in the local bar and restaurant trade”, assesses Sérgio Luiz Medeiros, president of AAONÇA. The executive understands that the documentation presented to INPI is well founded, which should guarantee approval of the Geographical Indication. The institute has up to two years to examine the documentation and determine whether to grant the title.
The process of structuring the indication had the support of the Paraná Tourism Secretariat, especially in the preparation of the Official Geographic Delimitation Instrument, a mandatory document requested by INPI, the body responsible for granting registrations of geographical indications in Brazil.
