Manaus (AM) – Next Tuesday (10), Galeria do Largo, at Rua Costa Azevedo, 290, in the center of Manaus, will bring the exhibition “Miriã Sutiri – Máscaras de Pássaros”, with works by the artist Duhigó. The exhibition starts at 7pm and has free entry.

The exhibition “Miriã Sutiri – Máscaras De Pássaros” has the support of the State Government, through the Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy. On canvas, the artist evokes the strength of the myths of the Tukano people and rescues their memory, telling stories through paints, graphics, shapes and brushstrokes.

Duhigó is an indigenous artist, born in a village in the municipality of São Gabriel da Cachoeira (852 kilometers from Manaus), in the Upper Rio Negro region of Amazonas. She has lived in Manaus since 1995. She completed the Painting course at the School of Art at the Instituto Dirson Costa de Arte e Cultura da Amazônia, in 2005, becoming the first indigenous person of the Tukano ethnic group to become a professional in the visual arts.

In her canvases, the painter expresses, mainly, the ancestral culture of the Amazon in the indigenous worldview. In her works, she also tends to represent the daily life of indigenous “nations”, their artifacts and mythological elements. Her priority is to record the memory of the Tukano Indians, as well as the Amazonian nature present in their affective memory.

“I am very happy to receive this recognition from the state and bring my masks, which are my imagination and the things I saw in my childhood that older people told me about. This is me, this is my job. I want people who study, who collect and who are Tukano like me, to know more about our indigenous culture”,

declares Duhigó.

For gallerist Carlysson Sena, the initiative represents a milestone in the trajectory of the indigenous artist, who will exhibit her works in an environment that reflects her personality.

“This solo exhibition by Duhigó crowns her artistic maturity of 18 years of career and her positioning on the national scene as the most relevant indigenous Amazonian artist in contemporary times”,

highlights Carlysson, the artist’s representative at Manaus Amazônia Galeria de Arte.

Since 2005, Duhigó has had a continuous artistic production that has already given him exhibitions in Brazil and abroad: “Coletiva de Artistas Indígenas do Amazonas” in Manaus – 2005; “Coletiva Sopro Tribal” in Manaus – 2006; “Indigenous Artists Collective”, in Manaus – 2007; “Coletiva Braided and Colors of the Amazon” in Manaus – 2008; “International Collective of Amazonian Artists”, in New York/USA – 2009; “Amazônia Sou Eu” Collective at the UN headquarters, in New York/USA – 2009; “CAA BOC- IDC Exhibition of Amazonian art” in Manaus – 2012 and “Salão de Artes – A Marinha na Amazônia”, in Manaus – 2016.
