Among the 180 samples, one could not be evaluated because it had already passed its expiration date. Among the rest, nine showed the presence of starch. The component can only be identified in laboratory analyses. Products with non-conformities were seized and the establishments were also fined in a specific administrative process, informed the Ministry of Agriculture. When curd has added starch, it is mandatory that the information is on the package as follows: “Mixture of Requeijão and Starch”, following the Technical Regulation of Identity and Quality of Requeijão. According to the regulations, to be called just “Creamy Cottage cheese” on the label, the product must only have the following ingredients: milk or reconstituted milk (dissolving the powdered milk with or without milk fat in water); cream, butter or anhydrous milk fat, also called butter oil. For “Requeijão” only, the recipe must be: fusion of a drained and washed curd mass, obtained by acid or enzymatic coagulation of milk with or without the addition of cream, butter and anhydrous milk fat.
