Folha debuts Public Health; series will unravel the SUS – 03/10/2023 – Health

Unveiling the SUS, including its procedures and exemplary professionals as well as its inequalities and lags, is one of the challenges of the special series of reports Saúde Pública, the result of a partnership between the Sheet and the Umane association. The editorial project debuts this Saturday (11).

On a weekly basis, Saúde Pública will present reports and interviews on different topics, such as the importance of primary care, mental health, chronic diseases, vaccination, healthy habits and human resources in health.

“SUS is with us from the time we wake up until the time we go to sleep, from conception to the last breath”, says Thaís Junqueira, general superintendent of Umane. “It is a huge, grandiose public policy that deserves greater publicity.”

A non-profit civil association, Umane enables and promotes programs to improve public health in the country. Junqueira attributes the entity’s decision to join the Sheet the quality of health content published by the journal.

“It is worth remembering that editorial partnerships guarantee the journalism of the Sheet total autonomy to check, edit and publish its contents”, explains Roberto de Oliveira, editor of Special Projects & Partnerships for the newspaper.

“The newsroom already develops, in partnership, other editorial projects in areas ranging from the environment to politics, always guided by non-partisanship, pluralism and critical and independent journalism”, says Oliveira.

The editorial initiative comes after the Covid pandemic increased the visibility of SUS. And, for Junqueira, the window of opportunity to encourage debate about the system, presenting what needs to be valued and demanding what needs to be improved, is still open.

“Having a population more informed about their own health care, more aware, understanding their rights and demanding a quality system is what we all deserve and dream of”, he says.

In this sense, the series of reports will focus on topics such as prevention and health promotion, curative and palliative treatment, paying attention not only to scientific evidence, but to the context of providing the service and the user’s experience.

“Health is built on the social”, says Junqueira. “Is there sanitation on the street? Is there a place nearby to go for walks? Is adequate and healthy food accessible? All these factors influence. After all, health is not just what happens inside the unit, specialized care, the hospital. It is the environment , is the whole.”
