Folha and FGV discuss the labor market and impacts on income – 06/21/2023 – Market

A Sheet and the Brazilian Institute of Economics of the Getulio Vargas Foundation are promoting this Thursday (22), starting at 10 am, an online seminar to address the evolution of the labor market.
After remaining in the double digits for several months, the unemployment level has receded.
In the quarter through April, the rate in Brazil was relatively stable at 8.5%.
This improvement, however, still shows a very fragile and unequal labor market.
In the poorest regions, such as the Northeast, unemployment remains high. There are a large number of young people outside the market, and a legion of discouraged people who have given up looking for a job.
The so-called out-of-workforce population, which is not working or looking for jobs, reached 67.2 million in the quarter to April. This represents an increase of 1.3% in the quarterly comparison (more 885 thousand people).
At the other end, the wage bill has increased, largely due to income transfer policies, expanded during the pandemic and with the new Bolsa Família.
To discuss the topic, economists Fernando de Holanda Barbosa Filho, researcher at Ibre-FGV, and José Pastore, retired professor at the Faculdade
of Economics at USP. The mediation will be the special reporter of SheetFernando Canzian.
