First phase of dengue vaccination campaign targets more than 60 thousand children in Manaus

Manaus (AM) – The dengue vaccination campaign aims to reach 90% of the 65,037 children aged 10 and 11 in Manaus, according to Manaus City Hall. Immunization began this Thursday morning (22), at the Family Health Unit (USF) Parque das Tribos, in the West Zone of the capital of Amazonas, which is a reference for 34 thousand users, including indigenous people from 35 ethnicities who reside in the region. region.

There, the first child to receive a dose of the Qdenga vaccine was Anita, 10 years old, who belongs to the Koripako ethnic group, originally from Alto Rio Negro. Anita went to the USF accompanied by her mother, Sandra Rodrigues, who celebrated being immunized with the first vaccine available in the Unified Health System (SUS) against dengue serotypes, a disease that has seen a rise in notifications in the country and which, in Manaus, adds up to 997 cases confirmed to date.

Sandra assured that she would always follow the national basic calendar, keeping Anita’s vaccination up to date, and stating that dengue would be no different. “She takes all the doses,” she assured.

The municipal undersecretary of Health Management, Djalma Coelho, highlighted, during the event, the importance of the vaccine as another strategy for preventing dengue and serious cases and deaths from the disease.

“Studies have been carried out for many years to develop effective vaccines and now we have available, in the Brazilian public system, an immunizer with a high level of efficacy and this needs to be valued as a great achievement for everyone”,

said Djalma.

The undersecretary highlighted that the vaccine alone does not change the risk scenario for dengue fever and that its results will only be seen in the medium and long term, when a high percentage of the population, in all age groups, is immunized. He asked that parents and guardians take their 10 and 11 year old children to vaccination points as soon as possible and that families, in general, are engaged in monitoring their territories, avoiding the accumulation of stagnant water, which is conducive to the reproduction of Aedes. aegypti.

“The majority of breeding sites are in the containers that people discard in their homes, backyards and surrounding areas, so it is essential that each citizen does their part, avoiding incorrect disposal”, he added.

For Djalma, it is necessary to carry out, weekly, at home and in the workplace, the “10-minute Check List”, a tool recommended by the Ministry of Health to eliminate conditions that favor the proliferation of the mosquito vector of dengue fever and also zika. and chikungunya.

The new dengue vaccine is available in 171 vaccination rooms in the municipal network, whose addresses and opening hours can be found on the website manaus.am.gov.br/semsa or directly via the link bit.ly/SalasVacinaManaus. Of the total units, nine are open from Monday to Friday, from 8am to 8pm, and on Saturdays, from 8am to 12pm.

For children to be vaccinated, they must be accompanied by a parent or guardian and present an official identification document, National Health Card (CNS) or CPF, and the vaccination card.

The Qdenga vaccine schedule consists of two doses, with an interval of three months between the first and second dose. Children who have had a confirmed diagnosis of dengue must wait six months to begin the vaccination schedule and anyone who becomes infected after the first dose must wait 30 days after the appearance of dengue symptoms to receive the second dose of the vaccine. Those with congenital or acquired immunodeficiency, those with HIV, those using immunosuppressive medications, pregnant women and women who are breastfeeding cannot be vaccinated.

Qdenga can be administered along with other vaccines on the basic childhood calendar, without the need for a break. The rule only does not apply to vaccines against yellow fever, chickenpox and MMR. In these cases, it is necessary to respect a 30-day interval before or after applying the dengue vaccine.

Schools

Undersecretary Djalma Coelho said that, in addition to health units, the city hall will make the vaccine available in schools participating in the School Health Program (PSE), developed in partnership by the health and education departments. The strategy is being developed by Semsa’s Immunization management and should be put into practice from March onwards.

The municipal secretary of Education, Dulce Almeida, was at USF Parque das Tribos, where she reaffirmed the importance of intersectoral collaboration and the participation of PSE schools in the immunization work in the municipality of Manaus.

According to Semsa’s Immunization Manager, Isabel Hernandes, vaccination in schools aims to complement the routine in vaccination rooms, facilitating children’s access to the vaccine.

“We are defining the details of this strategy, with the preparation of the necessary documents, such as parental authorization, and a calendar that guarantees the participation of as many educational establishments as possible”, said Isabel.

Isabel Hernandes recalled that vaccination will also reach children aged 12 to 14, as soon as there are sufficient doses.

“The target audience for vaccination against dengue throughout the country is children and adolescents aged 10 to 14 years, but the service is being carried out in a staggered manner, as determined by the Ministry of Health, due to the reduced number of doses ”, concluded the manager.
