First increase in meat prices in 2023 is registered; picanha and sirloin become more expensive

The price of meat rose again in October (+0.53%), after becoming cheaper throughout the first nine months of 2023. Picanha (+2.91%) and ribeye (+1.94% ), traditional choices for the celebrations, it was the cuts that led the rise in prices.
Even with the positive variation, the price of meat has fallen 11.08% since December. During the period, all cuts became cheaper, with emphasis on liver (-18.39), filet mignon (-15.66%) and rump (-13.57%), according to IBGE data ( Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics).
In October, the IPCA (Extended National Consumer Price Index) figures also show positive variations in the price of ducklings (+1.7%), fillet cape (+1.32%), rump (+1. 19%), chã de Dentro (+0.88%), filet mignon (+0.6%), pork (+0.57%), lamb (+0.38% ), chuck (+0.3%) and common lizard (+0.23%).
On the other hand, the liver (-4.58%), the termite (-2.91%), the round lizard (-2.34%), the shovel (-1.26%), the rib (-0 .89%), breast (-0.76%) and muscle (-0.47%) maintained the downward trend and prevented a greater increase in the final price of meat.
José Carlos de Souza Filho, professor at FIA Business School, cites the reduction in the price of beef arroba, which fell from R$ 255 to R$ 235 between January and September, as determining the drop in the price of protein in the first months of 2023. “At the beginning of the year, meat was more expensive on the domestic and foreign markets, due to cost and demand pressures”he explains.
The first increase in protein since December last year contributed to interrupting the cycle of four consecutive food deflations, whose prices became saltier again in October, with an increase of 0.31% in the analysis of all products that make up the group .
Substitutes
Whole chicken and fish, options to replace meat, also became more expensive in October, with increases of, respectively, 0.42% and 0.54%. In the first ten months of this year, chicken pieces are 11.97% cheaper, while the whole piece is 9.53% cheaper.
Other protein bets with a constant presence on Brazilians’ tables fell over the last month, such as long-life milk (-5.48%) and chicken eggs (-2.85%), which still accumulate an increase of 4. 28% this year and 5.04% in the last 12 months.
In the list of processed meat and fish, ham (-0.65%), sausage (-0.79%), sausage (-1.08%), salami (-0.79%), cod (-2.52 %) and dried meat (-0.65%) presented more attractive prices in October. On the contrary, salted and smoked pork and mortadella are, respectively, 1.69% and 0.7% more expensive.
