Employees at Fiocruz (Fundação Oswaldo Cruz) sent a letter to President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) in which they expressed their frustration with the lack of a salary adjustment for this year.

The last increase granted to the institution’s employees was 9% and occurred last year, after six years without any type of correction for inflation. A plan foresees zero adjustment for this year, which would be followed by an increase of 4.5% in 2025 and, subsequently, another 4.5% in 2026.

“From the vaccine revolt to the mutant mosquito, there are more than a hundred years of public service, decade after decade, every day, everywhere, fulfilling the mission that the nation gave us: saving lives under the banner of democracy, sustainability and peace”, says the letter addressed to Lula.

In the document, which is signed by the Workers’ Union of the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Asfoc-SN), it states that Fiocruz staff fought against time and worked “under the weight of a deadly scourge” during the Covid-19 pandemic. , in search of a vaccine against the virus.

“If other categories had salary recovery at the beginning of 2024, where are the advances in valuing those who advance science, those who care about creating and preserving better lives for everyone?”, ask Fiocruz employees.

“The current plan is incoherent and insufficient. Day and night, we, workers at Fiocruz, never neglect our commitment to society, wherever it is, because we understand that health is democracy and democracy is health. We have been penalized, forgotten “It’s unfair, it’s unacceptable”, they further state.

A copy of the letter was also sent to the Minister of Health, Nísia Trindade. She was the first woman to preside over the century-old institution, a reference in science, public health and health technology in Latin America.
