Amazon Theater Festival

Texts will make up the collection “Amazonas Dramaturgia”, scheduled for release in the first half of 2024

Manaus (AM) – The works “Who Killed Little Hope?”, by Geiber Teixeira; “O Morro do Bode Selvagem”, by Felipe Jatobá; “Love is So Far”, by Lenine Charles; “Burn the House”, by Caio Lobo Muniz; and “Dois Irmãos”, an adaptation for the theater by Cairo Vasconcelos; were selected in the Dramaturgy Competition of the 17th Amazon Theater Festival. The texts will make up the collection “Amazonas Dramaturgia”, which is scheduled for release in the first half of 2024.

The initiative is part of the non-competitive Ednelza Sahdo exhibition, with the proposal to encourage writing, value creative aspects and break the genre, with the production of texts for theater, to highlight the state’s scenic art.

“The Dramaturgy Competition has been taking place at the Amazon Theater Festival as one of the training actions and brings a publication project from the Amazonas Theater Federation (Fetam), ‘Amazonas Dramaturgias’, which is in its third volume”,

says Cleber Ferreira, president of Fetam.

According to Cleber Ferreira, the books will be published in digital and physical formats, available on the Fetam website (fetam.com.br), for an indefinite period of time, while physical publication, respecting copyright requirements, is scheduled for 2024.

“The selected plays will be launched at the Amazonas Theater Show. The authors will receive copies of the publication and Fetam will distribute them, free of charge, to federated members and public libraries, as a way of publicizing the powerful work of our authors”,

explains the entity manager.

There were 26 dramaturgy works entered in the competition to select five works, curated by journalist and writer Leyla Leong and award-winning playwright Victor Nóvoa.

“The curators made a great contribution to the selection, ensuring a diversity of narrative and styles, which enriches the process, and makes this publication mandatory reading for everyone who loves theater,”

comments the president of Fetam.

Curation

For journalist Leyla Leong, reading the dramatic texts, entered in the Dramaturgy Competition, revealed that the Theater that is produced in Manaus is becoming more professional and culturally elevated. She attributes the evolution to higher-level courses in the area of Arts, which began to be offered in Amazonas.

“In fact, not only the dramatic texts that competed, but also the performances by local groups and the spontaneous turnout of the public that filled the spaces. These are symptoms that good Amazonian winds have renewed the stages and audiences with positive changes, both in terms of themes and theatrical conception”,

highlights the curator.

Playwright Victor Nóvoa points out that five current dramaturgy works were selected in terms of their political actions and language formulations.

“It is not a simple move to compose a book with five dramaturgies, within a panorama as creative and pulsating as the theatrical scene in the Amazon”, says the playwright. “Our intention was to select dramaturgies in dialogue with the urgencies of our time and that experimented with language. Texts that travel and intertwine different aesthetic matrices, thinking of the word as a living power capable of provoking the materialities of the scene”,

highlights Nóvoa.

The 17th Amazon Theater Festival is made possible by the Federal Culture Incentive Law via the Ministry of Culture – Federal Government: Union and Reconstruction, presented by Nubank and organized by the Amazonas Theater Federation (Fetam), with support from Weg, the Government of Amazonas, through the State Secretariat for Culture and Creative Economy, and the City of Manaus via the Municipal Foundation of Culture, Tourism and Events (Manauscult).

The 2023 edition had 30 shows, 31 presentations, divided into nine days of programming. In total, 15 were from the Jurupari Exhibition, 10 were part of the non-competitive Ednelza Sahdo exhibition and five invited productions. There were 216 works entered in the selection, from 22 states in Brazil, with various languages, children’s, adult, puppet theater, dance theater and performance
