Fear of more layoffs at Americanas in RS mobilizes unions

Americanas has been in judicial recovery since January 19, after a financial gap of R$ 44 billion was found.
Only one case of a dismissed employee has been registered so far and it occurred at the unit on Rua dos Andradas, in the Historic Center of the Capital, the largest of the brand in the State. The president of the Union of Employees in Commerce of Porto Alegre (Sindec-POA), Nilton Souza Neco, said that the employee had been with the company for three years.
“They wanted him to sign without receiving,” said the unionist. The worker was dismissed five days before the retailer entered into judicial recovery (RJ). “For this reason, he did not receive the termination, only FGTS and unemployment insurance. To receive the termination, due to the judicial recovery, you will have to request it in court”, he explained.
Neco and the president of the Union of Shopkeepers in the Capital (SindilojasPOA), Arcione Piva, evaluated measures, at the meeting this Wednesday (1st), including access to job openings.
“We are attentive to the situation that has been taking place and in the crowd so that there are no layoffs”, commented Piva.
SindilojasPOA made the Sindivagas program available to Sindec-POA, a service to connect retail workers to shopkeepers.
“Candidates can register for free for new opportunities in the labor market through our website”, said the president of the employers’ union.
For the president of the entity linked to commerce, the situation is critical.
“It is worrying. We are going to work so that the greatest number of jobs is preserved, but we know that, when there is restructuring, there are always layoffs”, pondered Neco.
The trade unionist also emphasizes the lack of information about possible cuts or closure of activities in the Capital and in the State.
“The company has six months to present the recovery plan, so it’s all very vague yet,” he noted.
In a note, Americanas informed that it did not initiate “any process of dismissal of employees”.
The company also said that “it only interrupted some contracts with companies providing outsourced services”.
“At this moment, Americanas is conducting its Judicial Recovery process, which has as one of its objectives to guarantee the continuity of the company’s activities, including the payment of salaries and benefits of its employees on time. The recovery plan will define what will be the company shares for the next few months and will be widely publicized as soon as it is finalized,” the company said in the note.
Employees at Americanas branch in Porto Alegre show tranquility
At the Shopping Praia de Belas store, one of the largest in the capital, the lack of definition of the future of the flag does not affect, for the time being, the mood of the employees. The report found, on Tuesday, the low movement as well.
Only two cashiers were open and almost no employees circulated through the immense corridors, which were silent where the clientele used to listen to lively music.
Two employees confirmed that no team member had been fired due to the retailer’s legal situation. When asked by the report if they were apprehensive about the future, one of them said that “I was calm” and another replied that “they were informed that everything would continue as normal”.
Americanas close telesales; Rio holds an act to maintain jobs
As of this Wednesday (1st), customers who call Americanas’ telesales service can wait for this message: “Dear customer, our telesales service has ended. You can take advantage of our offers on our app or website. Thanks”.
According to the network’s advisory, the contracts in the area were outsourced.
Next Friday (3), trade union centrals will hold a unified act in Cinelândia, in Rio de Janeiro, in defense of jobs and workers’ rights at Americanas. The demonstration takes place at 10 am, in front of one of the brand’s units, at Rua do Passeio, 42, downtown Rio.
The president of Sindec-POA informed that, until now, there is no prediction of demonstrations in the Capital.
