paints and pencils

The artist Rosely Barros develops her canvases in fabric and with acrylic and oil paints. João César developed techniques with graphite and colored pencils.

Odaléia Rosely Nascimento Barros is from Manacapuru/AM. As a child, she was enchanted by drawing and painting, arts in which she considers herself self-taught. She developed her techniques by observing the paintings of the great masters of painting, the Dutch Rembrandt, and the Spaniard Diego Velásquez, among other Baroque, Renaissance and Romantic artists in the books she found in the library of the Municipality’s House of Culture. Later, she would cultivate a great passion for artists such as Pedro Américo, Anita Malfatti, Tarsila do Amaral and Van Gogh, among others.

At the beginning of her experiments in painting, she used water-based paint on paper, until she was introduced to fabric canvases and acrylic and oil paints. He developed techniques with colored pencil, watercolor, chalk pastel, acrylic/canvas and oil/canvas. His first exhibition took place in 1996, with the theme “Casarios”.

Another passion of his life is teaching, a trade to which he dedicated himself professionally until his retirement in 2019. From that year on, he had more time to resume his former passion for painting, which he had kept latent over the years. . Since then, he has been producing portraits, by dilettantism or commissioned, as the human form is his main theme.

For the exhibition “Arts Duo: artists from the land”, Rosely Barros selected a series of 11 paintings – acrylic on canvas, entitled “The Girl and Time”. These are paintings that recreate female figures in different contexts. In a multiart dialogue, the portrayed figures are presented in poems written by the artist’s friends.

Visual artist João César Costa was born and raised in the rural area of Manacapuru. As a child, drawing was one of his favorite games. Upon entering school education, he further developed a taste for drawing and coloring the exercises that were passed on, from the early years of literacy.

At the beginning, the passion for drawing and painting ran into some obstacles, linked to the ultra-conservative nature of his parents and the demands arising from the domestic chores to be fulfilled. He was constantly scolded for being caught, in the midst of the “important activities” of everyday life, making drawings on the back cover of notebooks, which the family saw as a waste of time with something that was not promising, that could not contribute to a reward in the future . Despite this context, João César always nurtured a hope of proving to himself that his art would be worthwhile.

Time passed, and João César had to move to the urban area of his municipality, to continue his studies and work. During this period, due to absolute lack of time, he abandoned the art of drawing and painting. In 2018, he discovered realistic drawing through the internet, a style that left him very impressed. He sought information and researched videos on the internet, in order to try to understand how that art was produced. He tried to acquire pencils and paper to start attempts at realistic art, he dedicated himself a lot, making several frustrated attempts to reproduce something similar to a portrait. With time and attempts, he improved his techniques.

In 2021, due to the Aldir Blanc bill, João César obtained approval for his project “Discovering Realism in Cultural Form”, through which he held an exhibition of his works, along with other painting, dance and music artists, obtaining a good evaluation by the critics and spectators present. Also in 2021, he also signed up for the Edict Amazonas Criativo, obtaining first place in the Plastic Arts category, with the “Artistic Seed Project” in which he offered workshops in realistic drawing, graphic arts, photography, EVA arts and canvas painting.

João César has some other art categories as a hobby, such as plastic arts with cardboard recycling, in which he produces replicas of weapons, and also wood arts, such as marquetry and joinery, as well as work with airbrushing, among others. João is a motorcycle mechanic, a job for which he supports his family, leaving the night shift for the production of 90% of his works.
