Ex-husband will pay more than R$ 1 million for domestic work – 03/07/2023 – Market

A court in Spain condemned a man to pay his ex-wife more than €200,000 (about R$1.1 million), the result of the sum of more than two decades of salary for domestic work during the period in which they remained married. The sentence was announced on Tuesday (7).

The news was received as a sign of progress in the fight against sexism and for equal rights on the eve of International Women’s Day, celebrated on March 8.

The Spanish court decided that Ivana Moral will be “compensated with € 204,624.86, quantifying the said amount through the application of the Interprofessional Minimum Wage in each year since 1996”, according to the sentence of February 15 of a court in Vélez-Málaga (Andalusia , in southern Spain). The defense explained that the calculation period was from June 1995 to December 2020, equivalent to the 24 and a half years of marriage.

At the trial, it was proved that the woman, mother of two daughters, and married under a regime of separation of property, had dedicated herself “essentially to domestic work” since she got married, “that is, taking care of the house and the family with everything that that implies ” justifies the sentence. The man must also pay a monthly pension to his daughters, adds the sentence.

In an interview with Cadena Ser radio, the woman explained that her husband did not want her to work outside the home, although she helped him at the gyms he owned, in charge of “public relations, acting as a monitor, in short, with everything she could”. In addition, she said she dedicated herself exclusively to household chores, taking care of her husband and the house.

“I was totally financially dependent. I felt as if all my abilities were diminished and limited. This made me feel threatened, worthless and with my self-esteem lost. I felt very isolated”, he explained to the Spanish broadcaster.

“[Estou] very happy because I think “the sentence” was well deserved”, said Ivana, remembering that during her marriage she did not feel mistreated. “But with time I opened my eyes […] Economic dependency is also a form of abuse,” he concluded.
