Everyone who tried to carry out a coup will be arrested, says Lula – 05/01/2023 – Politics

President Lula (PT) said this Monday (1st) that “all people who tried to carry out a coup will be arrested”, in reference to those who participated in the anti-democratic acts of January 8 in Brasilia.

“Do you remember that they tried to carry out the coup on the 8th”, affirmed the PT, during an act of trade union centrals to celebrate Labor Day in São Paulo. He then promised punishment – ​​which, in practice, depends on decisions by the Judiciary, not the Executive.

The promise comes in the wake of the CPI which, in Congress, will investigate the circumstances that led to the scenes of destruction in the capital a week after Lula took office in his third term.

Lula was initially opposed to the creation of the CPI, but decided to change the orientation towards the government base after the crisis with the fall of the chief minister of the GSI (Institutional Security Office), General Gonçalves Dias. He resigned last month after the release of images that called into question the agency’s performance during the January 8 attacks.

This Monday, Lula also defended that “people go back to being humanists” and can say they are left without fear.

“We can no longer live in a world where wearing red is seen as the enemy of the enemy,” said the PT candidate. “You cannot accept the idea that it is forbidden to say that you are on the left.”

João Paulo Rodrigues, national coordinator of the MST, also climbed onto the platform, where he embraced Lula. In the sights of agribusiness and exchanging sparks with some members of the government, the entity will be the target of a CPI in Congress.

Lula used his speech to express gratitude for the four years he gained in the Presidency “so that we can fix this country”. She said her goal is “to prove again that this country can be happy again.” May Brazil not remain “a victim of hatred, as we have been until now”, she continued.

Without naming Jair Bolsonaro (PL), the predecessor with whom he polarized in the elections, the president stated that it is not possible “to allow the lie to continue to prevail in this country”. “It was the truth that defeated the former president,” he said.

Bolsonaro participated this Monday (1st) in an agricultural event in Ribeirão Preto, alongside Governor Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicans).

In the act, Lula questioned why the journalists who were working that day were allocated by the organization in front of the stage where the authorities spoke. “The impression we have is that I’m going to hold a press conference, because the press is in front and the people are behind.”

He suggested that some organizer must be feeling indebted to the press and so he decided to give the journalists a treat.

Lula was flanked on the May 1st act by old war companions, such as the PT president, Gleisi Hoffmann, former deputy José Genoino and the ministers of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha, and Labor, Luiz Marinho.

The environment was friendly. The speeches, in addition to being generous with him, were cutting against his predecessor.

President of PDT-SP, Antonio Neto summarized in his speech the general bitterness towards Bolsonaro. He did not name him, but the target was clear: “We have buried the beelzebub of fascism. […] We haven’t entered paradise yet, we’re just closing the door to hell.”
