Aneel (National Electric Energy Agency) proposed an average reduction of 1% in the electricity tariffs of Enel SP, which serves the metropolitan region of São Paulo. The residential consumer, however, will not have relief, since the cut will be concentrated for industries.

According to the proposal that will be taken to public consultation, industries that buy high voltage will have a 4.19% drop in the tariff. Medium voltage consumers (0.06%) and residential consumers (0.11%) have practically stable tariffs.

The new tariffs, if approved, will go into effect on July 4. The proposal, however, will still be discussed by the market and consumers before being voted on at the agency’s board meeting.

According to Aneel, the items that most impacted the calculations for the tariff reduction proposal were the reduction of costs with energy acquisition and distribution and financial components of the previous tariff process.

Among these components is the cost of acquiring energy from Itaipu, which fell 1.98%. The return of federal taxes wrongly charged on the electricity bill in the past also had an impact, pulling the rate down by 6.68%.

The tariff at Itaipu, however, will be revised upwards, according to the new general director of Itaipu, Enio Verri. The value of US$ 16.19/Kw (R$ 85.62) has been in force since January 1st in Brazil, but was unilaterally fixed by the management of then President Jair Bolsonaro (PL), without consulting the Paraguayan side. The rate agreed between the two countries last year was US$ 20.75/kW (R$ 109.73).

Second largest energy distributor in the country, behind Cemig from Minas Gerais, Enel SP delivers electricity to 7.5 million consumer units in 24 municipalities in the metropolitan region of São Paulo, including the capital of São Paulo.

With readjustment at the end of May, Cemig will still suffer large increases, according to the proposal presented by Aneel. For residential consumers, the agency calculates an increase of 11.98%. For medium voltage industries, the increase is 12.52% for high voltage industries, 5.26%.

In Rio de Janeiro, consumers were also impacted by higher tariffs. At Light, which serves the metropolitan region of the capital, the average increase was 7%. At Enel RJ, which operates in the interior, the average increase was 3.28%. In both cases, the new values came into effect on March 15.
