Encontro das Águas series: geek culture merges with erudite culture on the stage of Teatro Amazonas

Japanese anime fans went to the theater to watch a concert of soundtracks performed by an orchestral training group

Manaus (AM) – The waters of Japanese pop culture had an encounter with the waters of erudite culture, this Thursday night (06/07), at Teatro Amazonas. The show “Natsukashii”, part of the program of the Série Encontro das Águas, was the vehicle for this fusion between cultures, presenting on stage a concert with anime soundtracks performed by an orchestral formation.

“Natsukashii means something like longing or nostalgia in Japanese. We do not have the exact translation in Portuguese. It’s something you miss but don’t necessarily want to have again. Based on this joke, we thought we could transport people who came to watch the anime concert to that same feeling and sense of nostalgia”,

explained maestro Átila de Paula, musical director and conductor of the show.

Átila conducted the Geek Juke Box, responsible for playing the soundtracks known to Japanese animation fans. With a hybrid formation, half orchestra and half band, Geek Juke Box fulfilled the role, taking the audience, formed mostly by connoisseurs of what was being presented, on an exciting nostalgic trip.

“We always have to take into account that the geek audience, especially in the Encontro das Águas Series, is our main audience and has its own culture. They are very demanding because they know the soundtrack of animes, games, they know the aesthetics of that”,

said the regent.

The Geek Juke Box group was formed in 2022 with the intention of filling a gap, noticed by its members, in the delivery of culture in Manaus: there was no musical group making music for the city’s geeks. With exclusive repertoire and arrangements, the band proposes to be a “music box for geeks”.

As it could not be otherwise, when it comes to Otaku culture – as fans of Japanese pop culture are designated, especially anime fans –, Cosplay was present at Teatro Amazonas.

Costumed as the main characters of the best known anime, Cosplay practitioners received, in the theater hall, the public who went to watch the show. Characterized as Saski, a character from the anime Naruto, Diogo de Souza has been cosplaying since 2021.

“I started doing social actions with superhero cosplay, I got to know more people and I increased my number of cosplays. Today I will be participating in the show, performing on stage during Naruto songs,”

In the audience, one of the most enthusiastic about the “Natsukashii” concert was the North American Amen Octer. And he had a special reason: he works precisely with animation in Los Angeles and is an anime fan. His excitement was compounded by the fact that he had discovered the concert completely by chance. “I know all these shows,” he said, pointing to the cosplay characters. “It is a very surprising circumstance. By chance I ended up here. I’m loving the concert.”

Irene Rizini, professor at the Pontifical Catholic University in Rio de Janeiro (PUC/RJ) was in Manaus to give a lecture at the Federal University of Amazonas (Ufam) and decided to take her American friend to visit the Teatro Amazonas. To the surprise of both, there was a show on display with a theme of great interest to the animator.

“I said: I have to show you the theater. And we had this surprise.”
