Billionaire Elon Musk welcomed China’s engagement in artificial intelligence security and said he would like to see Beijing aligned with the United Kingdom and the United States on the issue. He made the comments during a conversation in London this Thursday (2) alongside British Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak.

Musk supported China’s inclusion in the first AI Security Summit, held in Bletchley Park, England, which brought together leading companies and nations to agree on the initial steps of how to manage the risks of cutting-edge AI models.

“If the United States, the United Kingdom and China are aligned on security, that will be a good thing, because that’s where the leadership usually lies,” he said.

Musk, who in May received royal treatment during a visit to China, welcomed Beijing’s participation in AI safety talks at the event.

“I think having them here was really essential. If they don’t participate, it’s pointless.”

Sunak interviewed Musk — honored in the United Kingdom as chief guest at the two-day summit — on a small stage in a gilded room at London’s Lancaster House, one of the British government’s most opulent venues, which is often used for diplomatic functions.

Sunak, a self-confessed tech nerd, said he felt “privileged and excited” to welcome Musk and used the occasion to make a not-so-subtle investment pitch as the Tesla and SpaceX founder said startups needed highs rewards for taking risks in the industry.

“We have a tax system that supports this,” Sunak said.

MAGIC GENIUS

The eclectic discussion took place before an invited audience of dozens of other business leaders, the final event of a two-day summit seen as a major step forward in safely harnessing AI.

Musk and Sunak agreed on the possible need for physical “shutdowns” to prevent robots from spiraling out of control in dangerous ways, referencing the “Terminator” film franchise and other science fiction films.

“All these films with the same plot end, fundamentally, with the person turning off the robot,” Sunak said, adding that the importance of physical off switches was part of discussions at the summit earlier in the day.

Musk told Sunak he thought AI was “the most disruptive force in history”, speculating that the technology would be able to “do it all” and make employment as we know it today a thing of the past.

“I don’t know if that makes people comfortable or uncomfortable,” he said.

“It’s good and bad at the same time. One of the challenges of the future will be: how do you find meaning in life if you have a magical genie who can do anything you want?”
