Electric vehicle market is growing in AM

The medium-term economy, the rising price of fossil fuels and the incentive to sustainability, has transformed electric cars into an increasingly attractive investment in the market. Industry entrepreneurs and specialists comment on the benefits and forecasts of prosperity for 2023.

According to data from the Brazilian Electric Vehicle Association (ABVE), 49,245 vehicles were licensed in 2022, a growth of 41% compared to the previous year (34,990). In the last month of the year, 5,587 registrations were made, an amount surpassed only by September 2022 (6,391). Currently, the current fleet of electrified vehicles in the country is 126,504 units, including hybrid cars and light commercial vehicles (HEV), plug-in hybrids (PHEV) and all-electric vehicles (BEV).

Economist Michele Aracaty believes in the economic potential of the electric vehicle market in Brazil and Amazonas.

“It is a segment that unites sustainability, technology, autonomy and urban mobility, everything that Brazil and the Amazon need. In fact, a 30% growth is expected in the Brazilian market for the year 2023. Recently, Amazonas was the Brazilian state with the highest leverage in sales of electric vehicles, with 451 units ahead of the state of Pará, regionally comparing”, affirm.

The entrepreneur of HardEV Mobilidade Elétrica, John Briceño, a company that sells electric cars in the Amazon, emerged in 2018 with a vision of sustainability. John explains the profitability of the product he sells, and how cost-effective it can be.

“It’s a vehicle that doesn’t have the cost of nozzle maintenance, spark plugs, filters, oils, it doesn’t have occasional maintenance every three months or every 6 months that a combustion car usually has. The maintenance of this vehicle is alignment, balancing and energy charging, and its battery lasts 10 years. So you have a clean, durable and sustainable energy car, with no CO2 emissions”, he explains.

One of the factors pointed out as negative by Michele in the acquisition of electromotors is their cost, which until 2021, the initial value was R$ 140 thousand. John points to a change in this scenario.

“Today you have trams worth R$50,000. With this value, you have a range of 100 km, and it is generally a small vehicle. I’ll give my wife an example, every day she just goes to work and back, it doesn’t take less than 25-30 km. Then this would be the ideal car for her. If you look at an Onix, which is a small car, it costs around R$100,000. In addition to this value, you have to add fuel every day, do maintenance, something that the electric vehicle does not have. The advantage is that you remove these costs, pay off your vehicle, and then be happy with the savings, ”she says.

Briceno also comments on his investment in charging stations, which work with solar energy, a totally renewable and economical energy.

“This year we still have the project to install a charging station in Manacapuru, in Iranduba, another in Presidente Figueiredo and one in Itacoatiara. They are the closest road perimeters, it is precisely to encourage people, to let them know that there is a station, and that they can buy an electric vehicle, make this long-distance journey and have a place to charge their vehicle for free”, stresses.

The commercial representative of JCS Energia Solar, Adriano Barbosa, in the market since 2011, says that the popularization of clean and renewable energy needs to be increased.

“What is still missing is for people to become aware of the savings they will have. For example, you pay R$ 500 reais for energy today. We install the system in your house, and then you just pay the public energy fee, between R$40 and R$60 reais, using the same amount of energy you used before”, he says.

The mayor of Manaus, David Almeida (Avante), signaled in August 2021 his interest in acquiring electric buses.

“It is a reality that we are going to implement in our city, an innovation with greater comfort, all to improve the city’s public transport system”, he reported at the time.

For the economist, the sustainable economy movement has been generating several initiatives by the government. “Last year, PL 6020/2019 was approved, which created a tax incentive policy to encourage the development of electric mobility in the country. Regionally speaking, we could create an environmental appeal for the use of electric vehicles, given that we are in the largest tropical forest on the planet. It would be interesting for all states in the region to come together to seek a regional parameter of environmental appeal to encourage the use of non-polluting vehicles”, she reports.

With the incentives and positive signals from the State Government, City Hall and the Federal Government, the HardEV Mobilidade Elétrica businessman points to the future with positivity in relation to the sustainable automobile market.

“The trend is for Brazil to be able to advance, grow more, and for us to eliminate all thermoelectric plants in Brazil, still use the hydroelectric plant, which today is the largest share of energy generation, but for us to end up really extinguishing pollution through of fuels”, he adds.
