The documentary “Anamã, the Venice of Amazonas”, by La Xunga Produções, from Manaus, is highlighted in the second edition of Mostra Ocupa CCVM, in São Luís. The film will be shown this Thursday (11), at Centro Cultural Vale Maranhão.

The program continues until January 12th and presents seven films selected in the Ocupa CCVM – Amazônia em Foco notice, held in 2023 and which received proposals from the states that make up the Legal Amazon.

The projects received resources to be produced or completed and encompass a diversity of themes such as popular culture, the indigenous presence on social networks, paradoxes between the forest and urbanization, the impact of the flood of the Solimões River on a city in the Amazon and the cultivation of traditional pineapple from Turiaçu, in the interior of Maranhão.

According to journalist Orlando Júnior, who directed, script and images, the documentary was recorded in 2021, during one of the biggest floods that occurred in the rivers of the Amazon basin. He explains that the audiovisual production shows the city’s routine, which, in the last 10 years, has been suffering the impacts of the flood of the Solimões River.

“The municipality is completely flooded and residents have to adapt to the sudden rise in water”, commented the director. “Anamã is called the Venice of Amazonas because the residents don’t like to build walkways, they prefer to sail in canoes, speedboats and other boats through the city streets, it’s an interesting story.”

Production

Orlando Júnior says that the starting point for the film came after the Brazilian Geological Survey issued a warning of a major flood in 2021. The recordings took place between March and June.

According to the director, the last images were captured in October 2023, in the procession of São Francisco de Anamã, the city’s patron saint, during the dry period of the Solimões River.

“I had already been to the municipality four times, but always on rooftops during the flood season, I had never set foot on the city’s ground during the dry season. It was time to make a documentary about Anamã, showing the flood and the drought too”, stated the journalist. “We also followed a historic moment, which was the application of the first dose of the Covid-19 vaccine to riverside dwellers in the rural area of Anamã”.

The project has images by Leandro Nunes, drone images by Fernando Crispim, Michael Dantas and Bruno Kelly, who also wrote the making of and still photos.

The art is by Jayth Chaves Neto, editing and finishing by Fernando Crispim. The technical sheet also features Manuella Barros in the press office, Luana Pedrosa on digital platforms and support from Jânio Moraes Braga.
