Deputy asks for removal of Tarcísio’s secretary – 08/07/2023 – Panel SA

State deputy Emídio de Souza (PT-SP) asked this Monday (7) for the removal of the Secretary of Education, Renato Feder. In a letter to the Attorney General of Justice of São Paulo, Mario Sarrubbo, Emídio points out a conflict of interests in the portfolio and criticizes the waiver of textbooks printed by the Ministry of Education.

Feder is a partner at offshore Dragon Gem LLC, which owns almost 30% of Multilaser. At the end of last year, before he took office as secretary, the São Paulo government closed contracts worth approximately R$ 200 million with Multilaser.

The case is being investigated by the São Paulo Attorney General’s Office and by the State Court of Auditors.

In his request, Emídio states that the connection between Feder and Multilaser is serious and that the conflict of interests was “accentuated by the large contracts”.

As shown to Sheetlast week the Tarcísio de Freitas administration gave up participating in the National Textbook Program, in which public school books are purchased with MEC funds, and decided that it would only use digital content from the 6th year of elementary school onwards .

With the strong negative reaction, the government backed down and said it will continue with the printed material, however produced by the Education Department itself.

Emídio says that the waiver of R$ 120 million by the federal government to buy the books is surprising and that the action will be “harmful to the educational process” of public school students.

He cites the lack of prior consultation with education professionals and teachers about the new material and recalls that many of the students at public schools in São Paulo do not have the resources to access digital teaching material.

“The continuation of the Secretary of Education in office during the investigation process could jeopardize the completion of the Public Ministry’s work. The two investigations into him deal with sensitive issues and deserve to be thoroughly clarified”, said Emídio to the column.

The deputy asked the attorney general to point out whether the Public Ministry has adopted or is considering the possibility of adopting judicial measures for the preliminary removal of Feder until the cases are clarified.

So far, the Secretary of Education has not manifested itself.
