City Hall dance workshops attract young people and adults in the east and south zones of Manaus

In the midst of the opening of the 2023 season of artistic workshops, which began in the first days of January, groups of young people and adults from the residency project in dance “Movimentos Descentralizados”, contemplated by the public notice ‘Manaus Faz Cultura 2022’ from the Municipal Foundation of Culture, Tourism and Events (Manauscult). The groups formed to learn and improve contemporary, ballet and popular dance, in the neighborhoods of Petrópolis, in the South zone, and São José 2, in the East zone.

The president of Concultura, Tenório Telles, spoke with teachers and students about the importance of the workshops that are being made available in the neighborhoods to facilitate access for people, meeting a challenge given by Mayor David Almeida, to decentralize the making of art and generate jobs and income to artists and culture workers.

“These actions are to allow people to live this experience, which we consider very important. And get ready, because now in March we are going to launch another public notice with workshops for all artistic segments”, she highlighted.

The director of Culture at Concultura, Carlos Guedelha, informed that the announcements will be brought forward to March to give artists and producers time to program themselves.

Choreographer and dance teacher José Neto, responsible for the workshop project, informed that as they are at the beginning of activities, at the Association of Residents of Petrópolis (Somap), classes were closed with ten students, three men and seven women.

“At Zezão Gymnasium, in the São José 2 neighborhood, we have more than 15 students with three men and 12 women, but we expect to receive more students”, he said.

Classes are in the evening, between 6pm and 9pm. “We will be working from January to March with classes and from April we will have choreographic shows and colloquiums with the communities”, said the choreographer.

Dance teacher Adriana Góes, from Corpo de Dança do Amazonas, explained that the idea of ​​the project is to take the fundamentals of ballet and contemporary dance outside the studio and into public spaces such as ballrooms and sports courts. “It is not to mischaracterize the technique used, but to create a look that is not that of looking in the mirror. Classes are thus adapted to use sneakers and not sneakers, and then make similar movements, without losing any of the technique that would be used in a professional classroom. We teachers expect that, in addition to the benefits to the physical and mental health of students, we will be able to reveal talents for the world of dance”, she stressed.

The student and folklorist, Andréa Rocha, has been dancing square for 40 years. A resident of the Petrópolis neighborhood, she always participates in community activities. “First, because I like to be moving around, I think this appreciation is important, especially for the artist, in the neighborhood”, she said.
