Creation of formal jobs falls 26.3% in 2023

Brazil generated 1.48 million formal jobs last year, representing a drop of 26.3% compared to 2022 figures, according to data released by the General Register of Employed and Unemployed People (Novo Caged). This decline marks the second consecutive year of decline.
The services sector stood out as the main creator of job opportunities last year, contributing to the opening of 886.2 thousand jobs. The five federation units that led in job creation were São Paulo (390.7 thousand), Rio de Janeiro (160.6 thousand), Minas Gerais (140.8 thousand), Paraná (87.6 thousand) and Bahia ( 71.9 thousand).
In December, traditionally, jobs were closed, totaling 430.2 thousand, which represents a decrease of 0.2% compared to the same month in 2022. The most impacted sectors were services (-181.9 thousand) and industry (-111 thousand), with the most significant cuts being among workers with complete secondary education (-174.2 thousand) and those who receive between 1 and 1.5 minimum wages.
